South Padre Island is the southernmost barrier island on the Texas coast, offering a unique subtropical fishing environment where the Laguna Madre's legendary flats fishing meets offshore Gulf action within minutes of each other. The pristine Lower Laguna Madre is arguably the best sight-fishing destination in Texas, with enormous schools of redfish visible on the grass flats on almost any calm morning.
The back bay areas of South Padre Island hold impressive populations of speckled trout in the deeper channels and grass pockets, particularly during winter and spring months. Flounder are abundant around the passes and jetties during their fall migration southward. The fishing pier at South Padre is one of the most active on the Texas coast.
Port Isabel and the Brazos Santiago Pass provide direct Gulf access for offshore fishing. The offshore grounds produce outstanding red snapper, king mackerel, and during summer months, wahoo and mahi-mahi around the numerous oil and gas platforms. The proximity to Mexico makes billfish encounters possible. Check wind and sea state conditions before offshore trips.
