Port Aransas — "Port A" to locals — is one of Texas's most beloved fishing towns, situated on the northern tip of Mustang Island. The Aransas Pass connects the Gulf of Mexico to the productive bay systems behind the barrier island, creating strong tidal flows that concentrate redfish, flounder, and speckled trout at the jetties and passes year-round.
The Port Aransas jetties are among the most productive fishing structures on the Texas coast. Spanish mackerel and kingfish race past the jetties during fall and spring migrations, and the bottom fishing for sheepshead and black drum is excellent year-round. Live bait fishing near the rock structure at high tide consistently produces large redfish and speckled trout.
Offshore from Port Aransas, anglers access the most diverse fishing in Texas waters, including red snapper over the reefs, mahi-mahi and wahoo around oil platforms, and blue water pelagics like marlin and sailfish beyond the 100-fathom curve. The live weather forecast above is essential for planning safe offshore trips from this active fishing port.
