Solomons sits at the mouth of the Patuxent River where it enters the Chesapeake Bay, and it's one of the best mid-bay locations for targeting a variety of species without a long run. Striped bass, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel move through the Patuxent River mouth in season, and the nearby Point Patience and Cove Point areas hold fish consistently throughout the year.
Spring rockfish season is the anchor of the Solomons fishing calendar. The Patuxent River mouth and the adjacent bay structure produce stripers from April through May. Trolling with umbrella rigs or live-lining spot are the local methods. Summer brings bluefish and Spanish mackerel to the same water and the surface action can be outstanding when bunker schools push through.
Solomons is a consistent producer of large summer flounder in the bay channel edges. The Drum Point area and the sand flats south of Solomons hold fluke through Summer. Wind out of the south can build significant chop on the open bay — the Patuxent River provides shelter when conditions get rough.
Plan your trips around the tidal movement at the river mouth. The incoming tide pushes bait up the Patuxent, and the outgoing flush concentrates predators at the confluence with the bay. The tide chart above shows the NOAA predictions for the Solomons area.
