Ocean City is Maryland's only ocean resort, and the fishing at the inlet is among the most accessible on the mid-Atlantic coast. Ocean City Inlet connects Isle of Wight Bay to the Atlantic, and the current running through it concentrates fish year-round. Striped bass, bluefish, and flounder are the inshore staples; offshore it's tuna, marlin, and mahi.
The inlet jetty is Ocean City's most productive piece of water. Striped bass run hard through the inlet in Spring and Fall — live-lining spot, casting metal, or jigging all produce. Summer flounder pile up in the inlet and the back bays through early Fall. Bluefish are aggressive and abundant from late Spring through November.
Offshore, the Baltimore Canyon produces yellowfin and bluefin tuna in Fall. Summer brings mahi, white marlin, and wahoo on the temperature breaks near the Gulf Stream edge. Ocean City's offshore tournament scene is one of the largest on the East Coast, which reflects both the opportunity and the pressure.
The inlet tidal current runs fast — strong enough to make anchoring and presenting bait challenging. Fish the edges of the current rather than the full force of the flow. The tide chart above shows the NOAA predictions for the inlet and helps you time the productive windows.
