Lewes sits at the mouth of Delaware Bay where it meets the Atlantic near Cape Henlopen. It's a prime jumping-off point for both the bay fishery and offshore trips to the canyon country. Striped bass, weakfish, and summer flounder dominate inshore; tuna and marlin are the offshore targets. The Cape Henlopen State Park provides some of the best surf access on the mid-Atlantic coast.
Delaware Bay weakfish (sea trout) have been recovering, and the population around Lewes is fishing better than it has in years. Spring weakfish at the bay mouth can produce large fish — some pushing four pounds — on bottom rigs with shrimp or soft plastics. Summer flounder in the Delaware Bay channels and around Cape Henlopen is consistently productive.
The Cape Henlopen surf is one of the underrated striper fisheries on the coast. Fall runs of large striped bass moving through the Cape produce fish from the beach, particularly after a northeast blow pushes bait against the shoreline. Pompano and bluefish round out the surf season from Spring through Fall.
Delaware Bay tides run strong at the mouth. The ebb tide through the Lewes inlet carries bait out of the bay and the fish follow it. Plan around the falling tide for the best results near the inlet, and check the chart above for Lewes NOAA station predictions.
