Annapolis sits at the heart of the Chesapeake Bay where the Severn River meets the main stem of the bay. Striped bass (rockfish, locally) are the signature species, and they're everywhere from Spring through Fall. Some of the largest rockfish caught each season come from the deep channels near the Bay Bridge, and the fishery right off Annapolis is genuinely excellent.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is the landmark fishing spot. Stripers stack on the bridge pilings from Spring through early Summer, and the live-bait fishery around the structure is one of the most productive on the bay. Trophy rockfish — fish over 40 inches — are caught here regularly. In Fall, the bass push south through the same zone and the Bridge is consistent through November.
The back creeks and rivers around Annapolis hold yellow perch and largemouth bass in Spring. Summer weakfish (sea trout) fishing in the deeper bay channels near Annapolis is productive with bottom rigs and soft plastics. Blue claw crabs are abundant in the bay system here and crabbing from a pier is a serious local pursuit.
Tidal movement is the primary trigger for rockfish feeding in the river mouths. The two hours surrounding the tide change are almost always the most productive. Check the tide chart above before fishing the creek mouths and plan to be in position before the water starts to move.
