Port Lavaca sits at the head of Lavaca Bay in the middle Texas coast, where the Lavaca and Navidad Rivers drain into Matagorda Bay. The bay system here is shallow, grassy, and productive — speckled trout and redfish are year-round residents, and the fishing pressure is a fraction of what you'll find further south near Corpus Christi. One of the most overlooked destinations on the Texas coast.
The flats inside Lavaca Bay and Keller Bay are excellent wading territory for speckled trout. Fall is prime time — trout stack on the shallow grass edges and topwater lures produce violent strikes in the early morning. Redfish school up in the cuts and points around the Powderhorn Lake area temperatures fall in October and November.
Offshore access is available through Pass Cavallo to the south, shared with Port O'Connor. The platforms and natural ledges within 30 miles produce red snapper during the season and king mackerel and cobia during the Spring migration through the nearshore zone.
Lavaca Bay's shallow water makes it highly susceptible to wind. A strong north front in Winter can expose the bay bottom and shut down fishing completely. South and southeast winds in Summer keep water on the flats and produce the best conditions. Wind direction matters more here than the tide.
