Frequently Asked Questions

What are the tides in Port Lavaca, TX today?
Port Lavaca, TX experiences a mixed semidiurnal tide pattern common along the Gulf Coast, with two unequal high and low tides each day. The difference between highs can be significant, so check both tide heights when planning your trip.
What is the best time to fish in Port Lavaca, TX?
The best fishing near Port Lavaca, TX is typically one to two hours before and after each tide change, when moving water flushes bait off flats and through passes. On the Gulf Coast, outgoing tides are often the most productive because they concentrate baitfish in channels and creek mouths.
Is it safe to boat in Port Lavaca, TX today?
Check the live wind forecast above for current conditions near Port Lavaca, TX. Gulf waters can build steep chop quickly in winds above 15 mph, especially when wind opposes the tidal current. Afternoon sea breezes are common from spring through fall and can increase winds significantly after midday.
What is the water temperature near Port Lavaca, TX?
Water temperatures near Port Lavaca, TX typically range from the mid-50s in winter to the upper 80s in summer. Winter cold fronts can drop shallow bay temperatures rapidly, pushing redfish and trout into deeper channels. Summer heat concentrates fish around current and deeper structure.
What wind conditions are expected in Port Lavaca, TX today?
The wind chart above shows today's hourly forecast for Port Lavaca, TX using Open-Meteo weather model data. Along the Gulf Coast, east and southeast winds typically produce the best inshore fishing conditions with cleaner water, while west and southwest winds can push murky water across bays.

Fishing in Port Lavaca, TX

Port Lavaca sits at the head of Lavaca Bay in the middle Texas coast, where the Lavaca and Navidad Rivers drain into Matagorda Bay. The bay system here is shallow, grassy, and productive — speckled trout and redfish are year-round residents, and the fishing pressure is a fraction of what you'll find further south near Corpus Christi. One of the most overlooked destinations on the Texas coast.

Planning Your Trip

The flats inside Lavaca Bay and Keller Bay are excellent wading territory for speckled trout. Fall is prime time — trout stack on the shallow grass edges and topwater lures produce violent strikes in the early morning. Redfish school up in the cuts and points around the Powderhorn Lake area temperatures fall in October and November.

Offshore access is available through Pass Cavallo to the south, shared with Port O'Connor. The platforms and natural ledges within 30 miles produce red snapper during the season and king mackerel and cobia during the Spring migration through the nearshore zone.

Lavaca Bay's shallow water makes it highly susceptible to wind. A strong north front in Winter can expose the bay bottom and shut down fishing completely. South and southeast winds in Summer keep water on the flats and produce the best conditions. Wind direction matters more here than the tide.
