Matagorda is a quiet, uncrowded fishing community at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Texas Upper Coast. East and West Matagorda Bays provide outstanding fishing for speckled trout and redfish in relatively lightly fished waters. The Colorado River delta creates a rich, productive estuary with diverse habitat ranging from oyster reefs to extensive grass flats.
Matagorda Bay's speckled trout fishing is particularly noteworthy, with the grass flats along the western shoreline and around the ICW consistently producing quality fish. The brown tide and bay conditions here are typically clear, making sight-fishing for reds possible during calm periods. Flounder are abundant in the bay and around the river mouth throughout fall.
The Matagorda Peninsula surf is a productive fishing area for whiting, pompano, redfish, and occasional tarpon during summer. The Colorado River mouth produces exceptional fishing during shrimp migrations and mullet runs in fall, drawing large concentrations of every predator in the system. Spring: Trout stage over the scattered shell of East Matagorda Bay as water warms, with drifters catching solid fish on soft plastics through April and May. The Colorado River delta shorelines hold redfish, and black drum run the jetties in March. Glass minnow hatches can stack fish on the bars late in spring.
Summer: When the wind lays, the surf off Matagorda Beach turns on for trout, and locals watch for that green water window all summer. East Bay drifters work deeper shell early. Tarpon and sharks cruise the beachfront, redfish hold along the river and jetty rocks, and tripletail hang on crab trap floats offshore.
Fall: Bull redfish pile into the Colorado River mouth and the jetties from September into November, with slot reds schooling in both bays. Trout follow the shrimp migration under working gulls across East Bay. Flounder drop toward the Gulf as fronts push through, thickest around the river and Parkers Cut area in November.
Winter: East Matagorda Bay is one of the premier trophy trout fisheries in Texas in winter. Waders grinding slow plugs over mud and shell between fronts take fish over eight pounds every year. Redfish bunch in the river and deeper drains, and the Colorado holds trout when hard fronts blow the bays out.
East Matagorda Bay, reached through the Intracoastal from the harbor, is the region's calling card for drift and wade fishing over shell and mud. The Matagorda jetties at the mouth of the Colorado River diversion channel hold reds, trout and drum most of the year. The Colorado River itself offers protected fishing from the harbor down to the beach, with bank access along the way. Matagorda Beach stretches for miles of driveable surf. West Matagorda Bay adds grass shorelines and reefs when winds allow the crossing.
