Atlantic City's reputation is built on casinos, but the fishing off the coast is legitimate. The Absecon Inlet provides boat access to the nearshore reef system, and the beaches north and south of the city produce surf-caught stripers, bluefish, and occasional red drum. The inlet itself is productive for summer flounder and bluefish throughout the warm months.
The nearshore artificial reefs off Atlantic City are some of the most accessible in New Jersey. The Egg Island Reef, Little Egg Reef, and the AC Reef complex hold sea bass, tautog, and porgy on lighter tackle. In Summer these same reefs attract mahi and the occasional wahoo on warm-water days when the right temperature break sets up.
The beach north of Atlantic City toward Brigantine is solid surf fishing territory. Fall striper runs push fish to the beach, particularly after a northeast storm moves bait along the shoreline. Brigantine Island provides driving access in 4WD vehicles, opening miles of productive surf with far fewer anglers than the developed beaches.
The Absecon Inlet current is strong and the shallow shoals at the inlet mouth require careful navigation. Check bar conditions before departing if any swell is running. The inlet follows standard semi-diurnal tidal patterns — check the chart above for optimal timing.
