Surfside Beach sits at the mouth of the Brazos River on the upper Texas coast, and the river mouth creates a productive environment that sustains flounder, redfish, and speckled trout in the nearby bays and surf zone. It's close to the Houston metro area, which makes it popular on weekends — but the Brazos River fishing and Christmas Bay are distinct enough to reward the drive.
The Quintana Beach area just across the Brazos holds a productive jetty fishery. Redfish and sheepshead stack around the Freeport jetty structure, and the jetty provides shore access on both sides of the channel. Flounder pile up in the Brazos River mouth during Fall — one of the best landing spots for large flatfish on the upper coast.
Christmas Bay, just up the Intracoastal from Surfside, is one of the cleanest and clearest bays on the Texas coast. The grass flats hold redfish that can be sight-cast on calm mornings, and the bay is a designated state scientific area with restrictions that have kept fishing quality high. Speckled trout are excellent on the deeper grass edges in the cooler months.
The Brazos River discharge can discolor the surf zone after rains in the Hill Country. When the river is running brown, fish the jetties or move inside to Christmas Bay for cleaner water. The Gulf beach at Surfside fishes best when the surf is calm and the current isn't pushing river water down the beach.
