Frequently Asked Questions

What are the tides in Surfside Beach, TX today?
Surfside Beach, TX experiences a mixed semidiurnal tide pattern common along the Gulf Coast, with two unequal high and low tides each day. The difference between highs can be significant, so check both tide heights when planning your trip.
What is the best time to fish in Surfside Beach, TX?
The best fishing near Surfside Beach, TX is typically one to two hours before and after each tide change, when moving water flushes bait off flats and through passes. On the Gulf Coast, outgoing tides are often the most productive because they concentrate baitfish in channels and creek mouths.
Is it safe to boat in Surfside Beach, TX today?
Check the live wind forecast above for current conditions near Surfside Beach, TX. Gulf waters can build steep chop quickly in winds above 15 mph, especially when wind opposes the tidal current. Afternoon sea breezes are common from spring through fall and can increase winds significantly after midday.
What is the water temperature near Surfside Beach, TX?
Water temperatures near Surfside Beach, TX typically range from the mid-50s in winter to the upper 80s in summer. Winter cold fronts can drop shallow bay temperatures rapidly, pushing redfish and trout into deeper channels. Summer heat concentrates fish around current and deeper structure.
What wind conditions are expected in Surfside Beach, TX today?
The wind chart above shows today's hourly forecast for Surfside Beach, TX using Open-Meteo weather model data. Along the Gulf Coast, east and southeast winds typically produce the best inshore fishing conditions with cleaner water, while west and southwest winds can push murky water across bays.

Fishing in Surfside Beach, TX

Surfside Beach sits at the mouth of the Brazos River on the upper Texas coast, and the river mouth creates a productive environment that sustains flounder, redfish, and speckled trout in the nearby bays and surf zone. It's close to the Houston metro area, which makes it popular on weekends — but the Brazos River fishing and Christmas Bay are distinct enough to reward the drive.

Planning Your Trip

The Quintana Beach area just across the Brazos holds a productive jetty fishery. Redfish and sheepshead stack around the Freeport jetty structure, and the jetty provides shore access on both sides of the channel. Flounder pile up in the Brazos River mouth during Fall — one of the best landing spots for large flatfish on the upper coast.

Christmas Bay, just up the Intracoastal from Surfside, is one of the cleanest and clearest bays on the Texas coast. The grass flats hold redfish that can be sight-cast on calm mornings, and the bay is a designated state scientific area with restrictions that have kept fishing quality high. Speckled trout are excellent on the deeper grass edges in the cooler months.

The Brazos River discharge can discolor the surf zone after rains in the Hill Country. When the river is running brown, fish the jetties or move inside to Christmas Bay for cleaner water. The Gulf beach at Surfside fishes best when the surf is calm and the current isn't pushing river water down the beach.
