Freeport sits on the south shore of Long Island where the back bays of Jones Beach Island and the Great South Bay provide protected inshore fishing close to New York City. The Freeport Inlet and the back bay channels hold summer flounder, striped bass, and bluefish throughout the warm months. It's the most accessible saltwater fishing within range of the metro area.
Fluke fishing in the channels and around the jetty is the dominant Summer activity. Drifting with bucktails and Gulp! is standard, and keeper fluke are caught on most trips. Striped bass show up in the back bays in Spring and again in Fall, and the canal-side night fishing during the migration can be productive from shore.
The party boat fleet out of Freeport is one of the largest on the East Coast. Head boats make daily runs to the nearshore porgy and sea bass grounds, providing affordable access to consistent fishing. In Summer, private boats can reach the mahi and bluefin tuna that show up on the temperature breaks south of the inlet.
Great South Bay is largely protected but can get rough in a sustained south wind. The channels and back areas stay calmer. The inlet is straightforward in most conditions, but check the bar when any east swell is running before heading outside.
