Montauk is the striped bass capital of the Northeast. The Point — where Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and the Atlantic converge — is the most famous surf fishing spot in the country. From Fall through late Spring, bass anglers make the pilgrimage to Montauk to target stripers that can push well over 50 pounds. The bait concentrations at the rip are unlike anything else on the coast.
The Point itself is accessible on foot, and the crowd during peak Fall migration is substantial — but so are the fish. Big stripers, bluefish, and false albacore crash through the rip together in October and early November. From the charter fleet, bluefin and yellowfin tuna running the south shore canyons in Summer and Fall are the other major draw.
Montauk Harbor holds a productive striper fishery in its own right, particularly at night. The harbor lights and the dock structure around the commercial fleet attract bass and bluefish year-round. Fluke fishing in the harbor and on the flats east of the lighthouse is excellent in Summer.
Montauk weather can deteriorate quickly in Fall. A northeast blow that seems manageable at the harbor can make the Point treacherous. Check wave height and wind direction before driving out, and know that conditions at the Point are typically worse than anywhere else on Long Island.
