Fire Island is a barrier island running along the south shore of Long Island, and the inlets and back bays that separate it from the mainland are highly productive. Fire Island Inlet, Democrat Point, and the Great South Bay all hold striped bass and bluefish in season. The island is mostly ferry-access only, which keeps shore fishing pressure on the surf side relatively low.
The Democrat Point surf at Fire Island Inlet is one of Long Island's best striper spots outside of Montauk. Fall runs push bass through the inlet rip, and surfcasters who know the structure around the point do very well in October and November. The ocean beach also produces bass and bluefish when bait is present along the sand.
The bay side of Fire Island holds excellent fluke fishing in Summer, particularly in the channels between the island and the mainland. The bay is also outstanding blue claw crabbing territory — worth noting for multi-species trips when the wind picks up.
Fire Island Inlet is notoriously shallow and conditions at the bar change with every swell. Local knowledge of the channel position matters for safe navigation. Check the tide chart above for the NOAA predictions nearest the inlet before making the run outside.
