Biloxi sits at the heart of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, with the Back Bay of Biloxi and Mississippi Sound providing productive inshore fishing within easy reach of the city. Speckled trout and redfish are the primary targets, and the Sound's extensive grass flats hold fish year-round. Mississippi doesn't have Florida's name recognition, but the inshore fishing is legitimate and the pressure is lower.
The barrier islands — Ship Island, Horn Island, Petit Bois — lying 10 to 12 miles offshore create a protected environment inside the Sound that's excellent for speckled trout. Fall is the best season, when trout stack in the grass and redfish school on the points. The barrier island beaches also provide some of the best surf fishing on the Gulf Coast for pompano in Spring and Fall.
Offshore from Biloxi, the oil and gas platforms compensate for the lack of natural structure on the gradual shelf. Platforms within 30 miles produce red snapper, amberjack, and cobia consistently. The Chandeleur Islands to the west are accessible from Biloxi and offer remote redfish and flounder fishing with minimal company.
Wind from the north can drain the shallow Sound quickly, making the grass flats unfishable. The best conditions come on south or southwest winds that hold water on the flats. Check the forecast before planning a wade or shallow-water trip.
