Lafitte sits in the heart of the Barataria Bay watershed south of New Orleans, surrounded by one of Louisiana's most productive and accessible coastal fishing environments. The Barataria basin — a vast network of bays, passes, ponds, and tidal creeks — is home to enormous populations of redfish and speckled trout that draw serious anglers from across the South.
The tidal ponds and marsh edges throughout the Barataria system are exceptional for sight-casting to redfish, especially during early morning low tides when fish tail visibly in shallow water. Speckled trout stack up in the cuts and channels leading from the ponds to the open bays, particularly during fall when baitfish migrations trigger feeding frenzies. Flounder are abundant in the deeper bayous and channels.
Lafitte provides easy access to the offshore waters of the Gulf through Barataria Pass, where red snapper, amberjack, and other reef species can be found on the numerous offshore structures. The area's proximity to New Orleans makes it a popular day-trip destination for urban anglers seeking world-class coastal fishing just an hour from the city. Use the live tide chart to time your marsh and inshore excursions.
