Tybee Island sits at the mouth of the Savannah River, making it one of Georgia's most accessible and productive fishing destinations. The island's position between the river mouth, Wassaw Sound, and the Atlantic means anglers have immediate access to a diverse range of fishing environments. The pier at Tybee is one of Georgia's best, with action for whiting, bluefish, and flounder throughout much of the year.
The tidal creeks and back bays surrounding Tybee Island hold abundant redfish, spotted seatrout, and flounder. The powerful tidal flows at the Savannah River mouth concentrate baitfish and create excellent ambush points for large redfish and flounder on the outgoing tide. The nearby Wassaw Island National Wildlife Refuge provides additional pristine habitat accessible by boat.
Nearshore fishing off Tybee accesses the hard-bottom ledges and natural reefs that hold black sea bass, sheepshead, and Spanish mackerel. The reefs improve with distance from shore, with grouper and snapper becoming more common on the outer structures 20–40 miles out. Georgia's extreme tidal range makes the live tide forecast above an essential planning tool for every fishing trip.
