Savannah is surrounded by one of the most extensive and productive salt marsh systems on the East Coast, with the Savannah River, Wilmington River, and Back River providing access to thousands of acres of productive tidal habitat. The area's significant tidal range — often exceeding 7 feet — creates powerful tidal flows that concentrate baitfish and draw redfish, flounder, and spotted seatrout to feeding positions.
The Georgia coast is known for its exceptional red drum (redfish) fishing, with fish reaching trophy sizes in the sounds and creeks around Savannah. Flounder are particularly abundant in the fall and are caught by drifting live shrimp through the tidal creeks. Sheepshead fishing around the docks, bridges, and oyster bars is excellent year-round and is a Savannah tradition.
Offshore fishing from Savannah via the Savannah River or Ossabaw Sound accesses nearshore reefs and wrecks that hold impressive concentrations of black sea bass, red porgy, and grouper. The Gulf Stream is accessible for sailfish and mahi-mahi during summer months. The live tide forecast above is critical in Savannah — the extreme tidal range makes timing essential for safe navigation and productive fishing.
