Narragansett sits on the west side of Narragansett Bay where the bay mouth opens to Rhode Island Sound and Block Island. The fishing is anchored by striped bass and bluefish, with excellent access from both boat and shore. The Newport Bridge, Point Judith, and the outer rocks at the bay mouth are among the most productive pieces of structure on the New England coast.
Point Judith is the focal point. The Point Judith Breachway is one of the most productive bass spots in New England — the rip at the breachway mouth holds fish through Summer and into early November. Shore fishing the breachway rocks at night is a Rhode Island tradition. The rocks near the Coast Guard station also produce well in Fall when bass stack on the bait pushing through.
Block Island, just south of Point Judith by boat, offers exceptional striped bass surf fishing and some of the Northeast's best false albacore action in Fall. The Southwest Point of Block Island is particularly productive. Offshore from the bay, tuna fishing at Block Island Canyon is accessible and productive through Summer.
Point Judith builds a vicious rip in northeast swells. The breachway entrance demands local knowledge, especially in any swell. Tides at the breachway run strong — the ebb tide through the cut is often the most productive window for bass.
