Cocodrie is at the end of the road on Louisiana's Terrebonne Parish coast, and the fishing surrounding this small community rivals anything on the Gulf. The open bays, marsh ponds, and tidal cuts of Terrebonne Parish hold redfish and speckled trout in numbers that seem impossible until you actually fish it. Fall redfish schooling here is gets in the Gulf of Mexico.
Fall is the best season. Redfish form massive schools in the open ponds and back bays behind the barrier islands, and double-digit catches in an afternoon are not unusual. Speckled trout stack in the cuts between the ponds and the open bays from October through December. Flounder pile up near the passes during the same period.
Offshore from Cocodrie, the shelf breaks relatively quickly into blue water, and the oil platforms within 20 to 30 miles produce red snapper, amberjack, and in Summer outstanding mahi-mahi. The run to offshore grounds is shorter from Cocodrie than from most other Gulf Coast ports. Yellowfin tuna are the big game target from late Spring through Fall.
The Louisiana marsh system requires navigational awareness. GPS tracks and local knowledge matter — it's easy to get disoriented in the network of ponds and cuts. Tides in this part of Louisiana are wind-driven more than lunar, and a sustained south wind opens the shallow flats.
