Jekyll Island is state-owned and relatively quiet compared to the more developed barrier islands nearby. The St. Simons Sound, Jekyll Creek, and the tidal flats on the island's north end hold consistent redfish and flounder. The Georgia marsh behind the island is pristine and sees minimal fishing pressure.
The dock pilings and riprap around the Jekyll Island causeway are classic sheepshead and black drum water. Fall and Winter are the best seasons for both species. Redfish show up on the marsh flats and creek mouths throughout the year, with the biggest fish moving through in October. A kayak or a shallow-draft skiff covers the back creeks well.
The ocean side of Jekyll has a productive beach for surf fishing. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and pompano all run the beach in Spring and Fall. The Jekyll Island Fishing Pier provides no-boat access to the nearshore structure and produces a variety of species depending on the season.
Jekyll's tides follow the same dramatic swings rest of the Georgia coast — a six-foot range means the flats that hold fish at high tide are exposed at low. Plan your approach to match the tidal stage you want to fish, and consult the chart above before launching.
