Provincetown sits at the very tip of Cape Cod, and Race Point is one of the most productive striper spots in New England. When bass are stacking up at the tip on their northward migration, the fishing at Race Point can be extraordinary. The National Seashore allows 4WD access to the beach, and the point produces throughout the season from late May through October.
Race Point creates a distinctive rip where Cape Cod Bay and the outer Atlantic meet. Bass and bluefish funnel through this rip during their migrations, and working birds over the rip are a reliable indicator of fish below. The bay side fishes better on the flood tide; the ocean side produces on the ebb.
Provincetown Harbor is surprisingly productive for stripers at night during Summer. Mackerel and herring pile into the harbor and attract bass, and live-lining or casting soft plastics on the incoming tide produces well from the pier and the breakwater.
The tip of Cape Cod can be foggy and windy in ways the towns further down the Cape aren't. Check both wind and visibility before driving out to Race Point — the 4WD access road through the dunes requires a permit and is closed in extreme conditions.
