Gloucester is one of America's oldest fishing ports and the tradition continues. The Annisquam River, the harbor, and the rocky shoreline of Cape Ann offer productive inshore fishing for striped bass and bluefish from Spring through Fall. The offshore fleet targets bluefin tuna, haddock, and in warmer years mahi-mahi and yellowfin on the historic grounds.
The rockpiles and points of Cape Ann — Halibut Point, Folly Cove, the Breakwater — are iconic striper territory. Bass school on the rocks and underwater ledges, and fishing with eels at night during Summer is the most reliable method. The Annisquam River provides a calmer option when the ocean shore is rough, with bass and bluefish holding in the tidal current.
Gloucester's offshore reputation is built on bluefin tuna. The Stellwagen Bank north of the city concentrates bait and the bluefins that feed on them from Summer through Fall. Forty- to 100-pound bluefins are regularly caught within 30 miles of Gloucester. Haddock and cod fishing on the historic grounds is still productive, though more regulated than in past decades.
Cape Ann's outer points are exposed and seas build quickly in a northeast swell. Shore fishing the rocks requires careful footing and awareness of wave sets. Check the swell forecast before heading out to the outer ledges, and use the tide chart above to plan around the best water levels on the rocks.
