Georgetown sits where the Pee Dee, Black, and Waccamaw Rivers converge into Winyah Bay — a massive estuary that holds some of South Carolina's best redfish and flounder water. It's south of Myrtle Beach and north of Charleston, overlooked by most anglers staying at either end of the coast. The Winyah Bay system is productive and lightly pressured.
Redfish are in the bay and the surrounding creek systems year-round. The marsh edges along the North Inlet and South Inlet hold fish on every falling tide. Fall brings large schools into the open bay where they can be targeted with topwaters and swimbaits. Flounder concentrate near the river mouths in October and November.
Georgetown's proximity to the North Inlet — a National Estuarine Research Reserve — means fishing pressure is controlled and the habitat is excellent. The Reserve flats hold spotted seatrout and redfish in an undisturbed setting. Sheepshead are year-round residents around the Georgetown waterfront dock pilings.
Winyah Bay's tidal range approaches four to five feet, and the current in the main channel runs hard. The outgoing tide through the inlet produces the best redfish activity. Plan to be positioned on the marsh edges water starts to fall, and use the tide chart above to time your approach.
