West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County offer some of the best sailfish fishing in the world, driven by the close proximity of the Gulf Stream and the rich winter current it brings. The area is famous "Sailfish Capital of the World," with local fleets consistently catching multiple sailfish per day during peak winter season. Kite fishing with live pilchards is the signature technique.
Lake Worth Lagoon provides excellent inshore fishing for snook, tarpon, redfish, and flounder. The inlet produces outstanding catches of snook and tarpon during their migrations, and pompano are abundant during fall and winter months. Pier fishing at Lake Worth Pier is popular for Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and pompano.
Jupiter Inlet to the north is one of the state's most productive fishing spots, known for its strong tidal flows that concentrate baitfish and attract large snook, tarpon, and cobia. The area's reefs and wrecks hold impressive populations of grouper and amberjack. Use the tide and wind forecast to maximize your time on these productive waters.
Spring: Cobia migrate north along the reef in March and April, often trailing manta rays within sight of the beach. Mahi improve offshore through spring, leftover sailfish come through on late fronts, and inside the Lake Worth Lagoon snook feed up ahead of summer while jacks crash bait around the inlets.
Summer: Snook spawn at Lake Worth Inlet, stacking in the shadow lines and eating at night on the outgoing tide. Mangrove snapper gather around Peanut Island and the inlet rocks, mahi hold offshore on scattered weed, and tarpon work the beaches early. Storm-season mornings inside the lagoon beat fishing through the heat.
Fall: The mullet run is the event of the year here, with September and October beaches erupting as tarpon, snook, jacks and sharks shadow the schools past the piers and inlets. Snook feed recklessly around Lake Worth Inlet, and as fronts begin in November the sailfish bite starts to organize offshore.
Winter: This stretch of coast sits on Sailfish Alley, and December through February brings the year's best billfishing to the 100 to 200 foot edge, with kingfish and blackfin mixed in. Inside, pompano run the surf and the lagoon channels, sheepshead crowd bridge and dock pilings, and bluefish and mackerel patrol the inlets.
Lake Worth Inlet, also called Palm Beach Inlet, is the hub, moving huge tides between the ocean and the Lake Worth Lagoon. Peanut Island sits just inside it, ringed by public shoreline, docks and snorkel-clear water that holds snook and snapper. Phil Foster Park under the Blue Heron Bridge offers easy access to the lagoon's deep moving water. South along the beach, the Lake Worth Pier in Lake Worth Beach is a proven platform for pompano, snook and the fall mullet run, and Juno Beach Pier sits a short drive north.
