Punta Gorda sits at the northern end of Charlotte Harbor where the Peace River drains into one of Southwest Florida's largest estuaries. The back bays and creek systems here don't get the same pressure lower harbor. Redfish and snook are the primary targets, and there are a lot of them.
Fall is the best season. Redfish school up in the upper harbor and the flats around Alligator Creek hold big fish on the falling tides. Snook stack at the river mouth through Summer and early Fall. Spotted seatrout are year-round residents, especially on the deeper grass flats in Winter where they feed slowly on the cooler bottom.
The Peace River itself is worth exploring in Summer when snook push upstream to escape the heat. The bridge pilings in downtown Punta Gorda hold snook at night — it's a convenient trip that doesn't require a long run. Spanish mackerel run through the harbor on blustery Fall days and are easy to catch on anything silver.
Charlotte Harbor tides run on a mixed semi-diurnal schedule. Some days deliver a strong outgoing and a weak incoming. Fish the outgoing for reds in the shallow flats and the incoming for snook on the points. The tide chart above shows the pattern for the day so you can plan around the best water movement.
