Homosassa on Florida's Nature Coast is world-famous for one thing above all else: giant tarpon. Every spring from April through July, massive tarpon — some exceeding 200 pounds — congregate in the crystal-clear spring-fed waters near Homosassa, drawing elite fly anglers and light-tackle enthusiasts from around the globe in pursuit of these prehistoric giants.
The Homosassa River and nearby Crystal River pour crystal-clear, 72°F spring water into the Gulf year-round, creating a unique fishery that includes manatees, redfish, snook, and spotted seatrout alongside the area's signature tarpon. The sea grass flats extending from the river mouths hold excellent populations of permit and bonefish — an unusual inland sighting for these primarily tropical species.
Beyond tarpon, Homosassa offers some of Florida's best offshore bottom fishing on the hard-bottom ledges and rock piles 20–40 miles west in the Gulf. Grouper, snapper, and cobia are the primary targets. The best offshore days are characterized by light winds and calm seas — use the live marine forecast above to time your trip.
